Famed horror writer whose books, at least the horror books, haven’t made a good movie since Pet Cemetery (and that was only because of the Ramones song), though his short stories make good movies, has really stepped in it. He’s one of these rich liberals who think they know best for everyone else, claim to be caring and understand, tolerant and all that jazz, and maybe he is…just not towards people who join the military.
Speaking to a group of high school students at the Library of Congress, King said this:
“I don’t want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don’t, then you’ve got, the Army, Iraq, I don’t know, something like that. It’s, it’s not as bright. So, that’s my little commercial for that.”
When John Kerry said something similar in 2004 he took a lot of heat, but you could tell he was attempting to make a lame joke, which should surprise no one. But King isn’t trying to be funny, he’s try to make a point, a point that says people who join the military are stupid and can’t read. One thing is certain, the people that join the military will not be reading Stephen King books any time soon.
