The American Farm Bureau Federation is calling for higher taxes so their members can get higher subsidies through the wrongheaded and pork-filled Farm Bill. Makes sense, doesn’t it? Have the government take more of people’s money in order to subsidize corporate farmers (since family farms get the shaft on subsidies) and charge people more for the product. It’s genius! And the Democrats are more than happy to go along with it.
This is from Congress Daily:
AFBF WILL SUPPORT USE OF TAX MEASURES TO BOOST FARM BILL FUNDING (116 Congress Daily 1/14) The American Farm Bureau Federation will support congressional efforts to use tax measures to increase funding for the farm bill. That position will put the usually Republican-leaning organization at odds with the Bush administration. Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman said money has to be found to increase spending on food stamps, fruit and vegetable programs and other agricultural programs. The House and Senate used different tax approaches to boost funding. Stallman said the Farm Bureau has signaled that either tax measure would be acceptable; the group supported passage of both bills.
The last line is great: they don’t give a damn how they get your money, they just want your money!
