Pictures from the August First Friday

Thanks to everyone who came out the this past week’s First Friday.

Here is a sampling of the pictures from First Friday. You can see a larger version of each of these by clicking on them and can see all the pics from Friday by going to our Flickr page here.

Also, we do have a Facebook group but there are only a few members because we don’t do much with it, frankly. But we do post some pictures from First Friday there a few days before we post all of them, and you can tag people, so there is a small benefit to joining. If you are so inclined you can join the group here. Considering some of the odd groups on Facebook people join, joining our group isn’t all that strange.

Celebrate the end of prohibition tonight at First Friday.

It’s hard to believe that 75 years and one day ago drinking booze purchased secretly and hidden away from prying eyes was not just something teenagers did…

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition, this country’s failed experiment with legislating clean living. In many ways we haven’t actually come that far (smoking bans), but in some we have.

So, if you’re in the DC area, come out to First Friday tonight and have a drink for all those who came before us who couldn’t without lining the pockets of Rum Runners like the Kennedy clan.

Little known fact about prohibition, alcohol was still available but only by prescription. Click on the picture for a larger version of the real alcohol prescription sheet from the era. What would the doctor say? “Take two martinis and call me in the morning”?

It’s Saxby in a landslide.

saxby-chambliss

The Democrat’s hopes of having a filibuster proof majority in the Senate were put out to pasture today with the landslide reelection of Senator Saxby Chambliss in Georgia.

While Democrats can usually count on a squish Republican or two to cross the aisle and vote with them on some issues (we’re looking at you, Maine), they’re not going to find it easy to run roughshod over all of our liberties.

With the Minnesota race still up in the air and mysterious, newly discovered ballots turning up in Democrat areas all the time, this is great news.  Congratulations, Senator Chambliss.

Bailout vote – Is it Mediare Part D all over again?

As of this moment the House of Representatives has voted down the bailout bill 207-226 and time on the vote has expired.  Calls for regular order from the floor are being ignored.  That means there is some major league arm-twisting happening on the floor of the House by someone, probably Democrats since they control the House.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  Will it be another Medicare Modernization Act vote where Republicans held the vote open for 2 1/2 hours while they worked Members for votes?

Jesse Jackson assumes Obama has nuts to cut off in the first place.

Noted race baiter, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, was overheard saying that he wanted to cut Barack Obama’s nuts off because he’s “been talking down to black people.”  “Talking down to black people” is code for not kissing up to Jesse Jackson enough, a “crime” for which many people are guilty in Jackson world.  Fear not for Jesse, generally those found guilty of such offenses are fined significantly by Jackson’s various organizations.

Jackson has since apologized:

“I have great passion for this campaign and traveled across the country … arguing the case for the campaign,” Jackson said. “And this thing I said in a hot-mic statement that’s interpreted as a distraction, I offer apology for that. I don’t want harm or hurt to come to this campaign.”

He’s sorry it was overheard, what a hero!

We’d like to think the confession that he is actively working on behalf of the campaign will cost Jackson his tax-exempt status since, well, it’s illegal for tax-exempt organizations are barred from partisan activity (though the fact that he still has tax-exempt status is a testament to the irrationality and bias of the IRS).

Jackson also said:

“My support for Senator Obama’s campaign is wide, deep and unequivocal,” he said in his statement. “I cherish this redemptive and historical moment.”

What’s redemptive about it?  We aren’t Klingons, we aren’t responsible for the sins of our fathers.  And isn’t it about time to get over skin color as something to either celebrate or hold someone back for?  How many people of various races or genders have to accomplish something the vast majority of people will never come close to before people stop giving an damn about race or gender?  The mere fact that he’s gotten the nomination of major party is pretty amazing since 99.999999999999999999% of us will never meet anyone who does, let alone do it ourselves.

A world like that would bring about the end of race baiters like Jesse Jackson, so he can’t let that happen.  That pretty much means the media won’t allow it to happen either.

Just for fun, go check out the comments on the Huffington Post.  Jackson, a well known socialist, is told to “Just shut up until the election is over.”  See, they know what Obama stands for.

Obama: Americans who aren’t bilingual are an embarrassment.

Doing his best to embrace the elitist label, Barack Obama went off on how stupid and embarrassing it is to have Americans travel to Europe and not be able to speak with the natives in their language.  He also says that he favors immigrants learning English, and that they will (though there are many millions who don’t), but that American children need to learn Spanish.  Why is that?  Most people will never travel abroad, so being bilingual won’t really come in handy for people, and if you want to learn a language that will actually be marketable and put you in demand in the future economy, learn Chinese, not Spanish, German or French.

But first, before you do any of that, learn English.  How many people born in this country lack the ability to communicate in our common language?  Walk through a mall and just listen to kids talking.  A huge percentage of them sound as though they’ve suffered a closed head injury.  If you can’t communicate in your native tongue should you really try to learn another?  It doesn’t matter what you speak, as long as you can speak clearly.

Fire all the English teachers and start over!

Pictures for the June First Friday.

Thanks to everyone who came out to Lounge 201 last Friday for First Friday with special guest John Boehner.  The Minority Leader was a great guy and very funny, hope you had the chance to get to talk with him for a few minutes.

Here are few of the pictures from that night, you can see the rest by going to our Flickr page here.
