Hitchens on Obama: He’s No King

In an article posted on Slate yesterday, former First Friday guest and all-around cool guy Christopher Hitchens gives his take on Obama and the issue of race. His last line may just be his best:
“So amnesiac have we become, indeed, that we fall into paroxysms of adulation for a ward-heeling Chicago politician who does not complete, let alone “transcend,” the work of Dr. King; who hasn’t even caught up to where we were four decades ago; and who, by his chosen associations, negates and profanes the legacy that was left to all of us.”
Since there is a bunch of speculation circulating out there about Condoleezza Rice’s visit to the Wednesday Meeting, seemed like as a good of a time as ever to post the picture we took of her entering the building for that meeting.

The New York Times is reporting that See, BS News, er, CBS News is considering outsourcing some of its news gathering duties to CNN. While we’re sure this caused heart palpitations in all five of CBS’s loyal viewers, which may well have been there before since CBS is the official network of the nation’s retirement homes and The Villages, the story is not true, at least according to CBS.
Then again, if people believed the crap CBS reported in the first place this story wouldn’t have had any legs to begin with.
Thank you to everyone that come out to First Friday last week, it was a great turnout with a lot of new faces. This is normally the point where the special guest it thanked, but that is clearly not going to happen this week. Thought about PhotoShopping in Tony Snow to a few of the pictures in an obvious way but time ran short. So again, we apologize to everyone who came out meet Tony, we wish we could give you an excuse as to why he wasn’t able to make it, but we can’t. Just assume the best. Next month we will kidnap the special guest a week ahead of time to ensure they show up.
Here is a sampling of the pictures from First Friday. You can see a larger version of each of these by clicking on them and can see all the pics from Friday by going to our Flickr page here.
Also, we do have a Facebook group but there are only a few members because we don’t do much with it, frankly. But we do post some pictures from First Friday there a few days before we post all of them, and you can tag people, so there is a small benefit to joining. If you are so inclined you can join the group here. Considering some of the odd groups on Facebook people join, joining our group isn’t all that strange.
You can hear the show on our homepage, http://www.itsfirstfriday.com/ (New shows every Tuesday, unless Monday is a holiday, then the new show is posted on Wednesdays.) You can download and play all our shows on your iPod or media player and have the ability to fast forward and rewind by going to the archives here.
IF YOU LISTEN IN THE ARCHIVES AND ARE USING INTERNET EXPLORER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FAST FORWARD AND REWIND ALL YOU WANT WITHOUT HAVING TO DOWNLOAD THE SHOW. JUST MOVE YOUR CURSOR OVER THE LINK FOR THE SHOW YOU WANT TO HEAR AND CLICK PLAY IN THE WINDOW THAT POPS UP.

Introductions, apologies about Tony “no-show” Snow and First Friday re-cap. Mark Penn out in the Clinton campaign, what will it mean, the demonization of lobbyists by politicians comes home to roost, free trade with Colombia, the good that Colombia has done and liberal’s objections to productivity. Mark Penn just got fired all over the place. Will this make a difference in the campaign or is it too late? The current polls in Pennsylvania and North Carolina and the Democrats money machines. Is the Jeremiah Wright issue dead and the attacks of the 527s in the general election. Will Obama stick with his pledge of public funding in the general?

The Olympic mess, extinguishing the Torch, the problems with China, Hillary calls for boycott of the opening ceremonies and she is right. China should never have been awarded the Olympics in the first place, the oppression of Tibet and Falun Gong. How strong of a message should be sent? Would a world leader boycott of the opening ceremonies mean anything? Pissing off China. Would the athletes give a damn?
The return of General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker, will it matter? Democrats have already said they don’t want to hear any good news. Obama, Clinton and McCain all at the same hearing and the benefits of seniority to McCain. How dominant will the politics of the election be in the hearing? The issues for Obama and Hillary with this hearing and Pennsylvania, Obama can’t go too far to the left and win the Alabama section of the state. The over/under on Code Pink outbursts at the hearing: 5.

Bill and Hillary Clinton are astoundingly wealthy, yet they have a disdain for capitalism. This strikes some as a puzzle, but the explanation is probably simple. From the very beginning, including the Whitewater development and the miraculous cattle futures trades, the Clintons have made money by trading on their power and connections. Now they make money by speeches and books, both of which are the result of their connections. At the risk of pretending to read minds, perhaps they think every other rich person also got wealthy in a similar fashion?
The Wall Street Journal explores some other implications of the newly-released Clinton-family tax returns. Check it out.
