MoveOn Attacking Patraeus

In a disgusting display of Anti-Americanism, MoveOn.org has taken out a full-page ad in the NY times calling General Patraeus a traitor and a liar.  Republicans have shown some serious backbone and come out in unified denunciation of this reprehensible attack on our military and one of its finest commanders.

NRCC: “”It is bad enough that MoveOn.org has been trying to bully Members of Congress into a course of action that most experts believe would lead to catastrophe in Iraq and the death of tens of thousands in a regional sectarian war. But comparing an American general, who has spent his life serving and defending our country, to traitors like Adam Gadahn, Jose Padilla and John Walker Lindh goes too far. Moveon.org owes General Petraeus and every American in uniform an apology. “

Blunt: “Enough is enough – Moveon.org has gone too far with an ad that attacks one of our nation’s finest generals. Democratic leaders must denounce these ads and make clear that they do not sanction what is an assault on the integrity and veracity of our nation’s top commander in Iraq.

“My colleagues on the other side of the aisle have tremendous influence over groups like Moveon.org. It is my sincere hope that Democrats will consider the consequences that attacking our men and women in uniform will have on our ability to succeed, and ask their friends among the anti-security set to stand down and respect the work of our generals in the field.”

Hensarling: “Though we live in a tumultuous world in which opinions are bound to differ, there is a right way and a wrong way to conduct oneself and there is a difference between class and classless. And this ad is not just wrong, it is classless. While no one would argue that the nature of our political system allows time for Democrats to be Democrats and Republicans to be Republicans, today should not be one of those times. Today, Americans from across the political spectrum must come together as we decide the next steps for our nation and our military effort.

“Earlier this morning, I urged Majority Leader Reid, Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Hoyer, the Democrat leadership and ALL Democrat Members of Congress to reject this disgraceful ad and listen to General Petraeus before participating in the political spin that all too often corrupts reality.”

Putnam: “In the face of growing evidence that the Baghdad Security Plan is working and numerous polls that show Americans acknowledge as much, MoveOn today has doubled-up on its very troubling investment in defeat by calling a four-star commanding general a traitor to our nation.

“This baseless attack on General Petraeus’s credibility is exactly the kind of divisive rhetoric that Americans have by and large chosen to reject in favor of keeping faith with our troops in harm’s way.”
